Leadership Team Bios:
Adam Newsome (CEO)
Adam got his start in the transportation business when he began dispatching at the age of 16. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1996, and spent the following summer assisting Mike Boone and Wes Newsome with the founding of Lazer Spot. That fall, he went to the University of Tennessee School of Law, where he graduated in 1999.
After a three-year stint in private practice, Adam joined Lazer Spot as President in 2003. He was named Chief Operating Officer in 2012 and Chief Executive Officer in 2014. The company has grown from 100 to 2,000 employees, and from 50 to 900 power units, during his tenure. Adam developed the systems and policies that allowed Lazer Spot to become more accountable in the areas of DOT compliance, financial reporting, and customer metrics tracking. He is committed to continuing the company’s growth progression, while retaining the close connections to customers and employees that have made Lazer Spot the premiere spotting company in the country.
Clay Herron (CFO)
Clay has spent his career of almost 30 years in a steady progression of senior financial leadership roles. Clay joined Lazer Spot as Chief Financial Officer in 2014. He has responsibility for all aspects of finance and accounting, as well as leadership of fleet management, I.T., and any merger and acquisition activity.
Clay brings Lazer Spot significant expertise in financial operations, M&A and financing that he built while in positions both in the U.S. and overseas. In his previous roles, Clay held CFO positions with Olympus Media, LLC, Vero Systems, Inc., TWS International, and BellSouth International’s highly successful subsidiary in Ecuador. Clay is a Chartered Financial Analyst. He earned a BA with a major in Economics and an MBA in Finance and Accounting, both from Vanderbilt University.
Phil Newsome (Executive VP of Operations)
Phil joined Lazer Spot in 2011 as Vice President of Operations. From 1996 until 2010, he was Executive Vice President and part owner of Morristown Driver’s Service, Inc. Phil earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee, and had also worked in management roles with Dockside, LLC, an import/export distribution center; KPT, Inc., an equipment and land holding company; and Dynasty Transportation LLC, a shuttle and personal transportation company.
Phil was named executive vice president in June 2014. Phil’s experience with freight management and strategic partnerships have enabled him to effectively lead Lazer Spot’s expansion in key areas, most notably the Western U.S.
Jerry Edwards (Executive VP of Operations)
Jerry, a 20-year veteran of the transportation industry, worked for a national over-the-road trucking company for 15 years. He worked as a trainer and received numerous safety awards. He joined Lazer Spot in 2005 as site manager for Lazer Spot’s then-new site at Kimberly Clark in Beech Island, South Carolina. He was promoted to regional manager in 2007, and became the company’s first Vice President of Operations in 2009. He was named executive vice president in June 2014.
Jerry was a linchpin of Lazer Spot’s early success, growing along with the company as it expanded the number of locations and customers it served. His connections with drivers and customers have helped ensure that, while growing into a truly national operation, Lazer Spot still has a very personal commitment to its stakeholders.
David Mumbauer (VP of Operations)
David joined Lazer Spot in 2007 after eight years at Roadway Express. In 2009 he was promoted to manager of two sites in Pennsylvania, and the following year he was promoted to Area Manager. In 2011, he was named Regional Manager for the Northeast, and in 2013 he became the first Regional Manager for the newly-created Southeast B. In 2014 he was promoted to Vice President.
David and Safety Director Ed Knepper pioneered a video training program for Lazer Spot that includes modules for fifth-wheel operation, safety strap utilization, and pre-trip inspections, among other things. David’s strengths in organization, training, and information technology help his teams leverage resources to achieve greater customer satisfaction.
Jerry Hudgins (VP of Safety)
Jerry earned the Certified Director of Safety Degree Certificate from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He also holds DOT’s Master Certificate for Motor Carrier Safety Management Compliance, and completed the Environmental Health and Safety Management program sponsored by the National Association of Safety Professionals. Jerry began his career as a plant manager for DuChem Industries. From 2002-2006 he was plant manager for Universal Environmental, where he first had responsibility for Department of Transportation compliance. In 2006, he joined Dillon Transport, a fuel carrier, as their Director of Safety. He then managed a terminal in Dallas for Dillon before deciding that he really missed Georgia. He joined Lazer Spot in 2011 as Safety Director, and was named Regional Manager for the Southeast in 2012. He was promoted to VP of Safety in 2013.
Will Rozeboom (Project & Marketing Director)
Will has a Business Administration degree from Brenau University and worked for Kraft Foods for nine years. When Lazer Spot was awarded the spotting contract at Kraft, Will, who worked in the transportation department, was given the task of coordinating the transition. He worked closely with the Lazer Spot team, and the company hired him in February 2002 as its first General Manager.
In 2005 Will was named Lazer Spot’s first Safety Administrator and began the formal safety program at Lazer Spot.
In 2009 he moved into his current role, where he handles pricing, new business, startup coordination and works closely with Operations on changes and needs. Because of his background in Operations, Will has particular insight into how to structure project plans to meet customer needs for safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
